Most robot vacuums that claim to mop don’t. They drag a damp cloth around behind the brush, and the floor looks wet for twenty minutes and then looks the same as before.

That’s the reputation robot mopping earned, and it’s out of date. A handful of machines now put real pressure through a spinning roller or a pair of rotating pads, rinse with fresh water instead of recycling dirty water, and wash themselves at 212°F afterwards. Those ones work. The gap between them and the rest is enormous, and no amount of marketing copy tells you which is which.

Do robot mops actually mop, or just push dirty water around?

The good ones mop. The difference comes down to three things: how hard the mop presses, how fast it moves, and where the dirty water goes.

Pressure is the one nobody advertises properly. The Roborock Saros 20 and Dreame L60 Ultra PE both press at 13 newtons, which is roughly what you’d apply leaning on a mop handle. The Eufy Omni C28’s roller presses at 9.8N. Budget combo robots mostly don’t publish a pressure figure at all, which tells you roughly what it would say.

Speed matters next. The Eufy’s roller turns at 270 RPM, the Ecovacs Deebot X12’s at 220, and the spinning pads on the Roborock and the Roomba Max 705 at 200. The Dreame runs slowest at 165 RPM. More rotations means more passes over the same square inch before the robot moves on.

Then there’s the water, which is the part that separates a mop from a smearing device. Roller systems feed clean water in at one side and scrape dirty water off at the other, continuously, so the surface touching your floor is always cleaner than the floor. The Eufy does this through 24 separate water ports along a 28 cm roller. Pad systems don’t rinse during the run; they wash at the dock between rooms or at the end. That’s fine on maintenance dirt and worse on a kitchen floor with something actually spilled on it.

So: pressure, RPM, and whether it rinses as it goes. Three numbers, and they predict mopping quality better than the suction figure on the box.

Worth saying plainly, because the marketing implies otherwise: none of these replace mopping a floor properly after a real mess. They keep a clean floor clean. That’s a genuinely useful thing to automate, and it isn’t the same as deep cleaning.

There’s a fourth factor that only shows up after a few months, which is what happens to the dirty water. Every machine here has a separate dirty water tank, and every one of them will start to smell if you don’t empty it. Docks that wash pads with hot water and then dry them with warm air, as the Roborock does at 212°F and 131°F, delay that considerably. Docks that rinse cold and leave a damp pad sitting in a tray do not. If you’ve read a review complaining that a robot mop made the room smell, that’s usually the dock rather than the floor.

The last thing that separates a real mop from a wet cloth is what the robot does at the edges. A roller or a pad set in the middle of a round chassis physically cannot reach a skirting board, and manufacturers solve it in different ways: iRobot extends the roller sideways with PerfectEdge, Ecovacs extends the whole roller assembly, and spinning-pad robots push one pad out past the chassis on the wall side. If nobody mentions edge cleaning in the spec sheet, assume you’ll be doing the edges by hand, which for most kitchens is where the visible dirt actually is.

Is there still a dedicated robot mop worth buying?

No, and that’s a change worth knowing about before you shop.

The iRobot Braava jet m6 was the best-known mop-only robot, and it’s the one most “best robot mop” lists still recommend. iRobot has not formally discontinued it, but it sits outside the current range and the July 2026 refresh passed it by entirely. That’s the same pattern the Roomba j7+ showed before it disappeared: not formally discontinued, but no longer in normal distribution.

We’re not recommending it. Buying a robot at the end of its distribution life means no accessory supply and no support runway, and mop pads are a consumable.

The wider point is that the dedicated robot mop is basically gone as a category. Manufacturers worked out that a robot already driving around your floors may as well vacuum on the same trip, and that a mop-only robot needs you to vacuum first anyway or it just makes mud. Every machine below is a vacuum-mop combo. That’s not a compromise any more, it’s the whole market.

Roller mop or spinning pads: which cleans better?

This is the real fork in the road, and it decides more about how the machine performs than the brand does.

Roller mops use a single cylindrical roller running the width of the robot, continuously fed with clean water and continuously scraped. The Ecovacs Deebot X12’s OZMO Roller 3.0 is 10.6 inches long at 220 RPM; the Eufy Omni C28’s HydroJet roller is 28 cm at 270 RPM; the Roomba Max 705 Combo uses a PowerSpin roller with an edge-cleaning extension.

Because a roller is always being rinsed, it doesn’t recycle dirt. It’s also one continuous contact strip rather than two circles, so coverage per pass is more even. The downside is corners: a roller ends where the chassis ends, so it needs an edge trick to reach skirting boards. iRobot’s PerfectEdge and Ecovacs’ extending roller both address this.

Spinning pads are two rotating discs pressed down onto the floor, as on the Roborock Saros 20 and the Dreame L60 Ultra PE. They apply more downward force, 13N on both, and the outer edge of a spinning disc can be pushed past the chassis to reach into corners. They scrub dried-on marks better than a roller does, which is why the Dreame scores 85 on stain removal.

What they don’t do is rinse mid-run. Both wash at the dock, at a verified 212°F, and both lift over carpet. On a lightly soiled floor that’s irrelevant. On a kitchen floor after a toddler, the pads are carrying the mess with them until the next dock visit.

Our call: rollers for kitchens, pets and anywhere food hits the floor. Pads for larger hard-floor areas where the job is maintenance and the occasional dried-on mark. If you genuinely can’t decide, the roller is the safer default, because a dirty roller is still being rinsed and a dirty pad isn’t.

“Not stated” means the manufacturer doesn’t publish the figure, not that it’s zero. Roborock and iRobot both lift their mops over carpet without stating a height, and Ecovacs and iRobot both heat their wash water without stating a temperature.

Ecovacs Deebot X12 OmniCyclone - best overall mop

The OZMO Roller 3.0 is the best mopping hardware here. A 10.6-inch roller at 220 RPM, rinsed continuously, washed with hot water at the dock, and lifted 15mm clear when it hits carpet. That’s the highest lift any of these five publishes, and it’s the difference between confidently running it across a rug and hovering nervously.

The supporting cast is strong too. It avoided 23 of 24 objects in Vacuum Wars’ obstacle course, the best score of anything on this page. Suction is 22,000 Pa in Blast mode. The dock holds 3.5 L of clean water and 2.7 L of dirty, and empties dust into a bagless cyclone rated for 48 days rather than a bag you keep buying.

At 3.86 inches tall it fits under most furniture. The 200-minute runtime covers a large house in one go.

Best mop of the group, and the one we’d buy.

Eufy Omni C28 - best value

The fastest roller here at 270 RPM, pressing 9.8N through a 28 cm roller fed by 24 water ports. On mopping hardware alone it punches well above where its price sits.

The compromise is suction, at 15,000 Pa, the lowest of the five. Vacuum Wars measured about 1,191 sq ft of coverage per charge from a 216-minute battery, which is respectable. Mop lift is 10.8mm, fine for low pile and marginal on anything thicker. Hot-air drying runs at 122°F, cooler than the 212°F wash the Roborock and Dreame manage.

If mopping is the job and vacuuming is the bonus, this is the sensible spend.

iRobot Roomba Max 705 Combo - best self-maintenance

The one that asks least of you. Its AutoWash dock washes the PowerSpin roller with heated water and then dries it, empties dust for 75 days, and holds enough water for roughly eight weeks of mopping at one run a week. PerfectEdge extends the roller out to the skirting board.

Navigation is the other strength: ClearView Pro LiDAR maps 1,000 sq ft in nine minutes, and PrecisionVision recognises cords, socks and pet waste. iRobot publishes no Pa figure, which is annoying, and third-party testing puts it around 13,000 Pa with 65-69% pickup on low-pile carpet. Not a carpet machine.

Worth it if the appeal of a robot is not thinking about it.

Roborock Saros 20 - best premium

The most capable machine here, and the most expensive. Dual pads at 200 RPM and 13N adaptive pressure, washed at 212°F and dried at 131°F. Suction is 36,000 Pa, the highest figure published here, so this is the one that genuinely does both jobs.

It’s 3.14 inches tall, which gets it under furniture that stops everything else, and the AdaptiLift chassis cleared a 57mm threshold in testing. Obstacle avoidance is the weak spot relative to its price: 17 of 24 objects avoided, against the Ecovacs’ 23.

If you want one robot to actually replace both machines, this is it.

Dreame L60 Ultra PE - best mid-range

Strong on the mopping metrics that matter: 13N pressure, 212°F wash, 85 on stain removal, 94% on carpet deep cleaning, and 100% pickup of flattened pet hair with zero brush wrap.

The catch is the vacuum, and it’s a real one. Dreame claims 30,000 Pa, but Vacuum Wars measured a suction score of 0.57 against a category average of 0.99, with airflow of 15 against an average of 17. The claimed figure and the measured performance don’t agree, and the measured one is what your floor experiences.

Mop with it. Just don’t expect the suction number on the box.

A note on the Shark PowerDetect UV Reveal

Shark’s PowerDetect is an excellent robot vacuum and we recommend it as one. It scored 3.80 of 5 with Vacuum Wars against a category average of 2.58, picked up 91.5% of pet hair, deep-cleaned 88% of carpet, and covered 2,093 sq ft per charge, nearly double the category average.

It’s a poor mop. Vacuum Wars scored its combined mopping 0.55 against a category average of 22.5, and measured it leaving up to five times the category average of water behind on the floor. The 20mm mop lift is the best here and the 185°F pad wash is respectable, but neither compensates for the mopping result.

We’re saying so because it appears on plenty of robot mop lists on the strength of its vacuum scores. Get it for pet hair. Don’t get it to mop.

Which one sweeps and mops in a single pass?

All five do, and the question underneath it is usually whether the mop gets your carpet wet on the way past.

That’s what mop lift answers. The Ecovacs Deebot X12 lifts 15mm, the Eufy Omni C28 10.8mm, the Dreame L60 Ultra PE 10.5mm. Roborock doesn’t publish a lift height for the Saros 20, and iRobot doesn’t publish one for the Max 705 Combo; both detect carpet and lift, but we’re not going to put a number on something the manufacturer hasn’t stated.

Rough guide: over 15mm and you can run it across a medium-pile rug without thinking. Around 10mm is fine for low pile and flat weave. Under that, set a no-go zone.

The other half of single-pass cleaning is whether the machine vacuums before it mops or at the same time. These all mop behind the brush in one trip, which is why the mop lift and the rinsing system matter so much: whatever the brush misses, the mop is about to spread.

That has a practical consequence people discover the hard way. On a floor with grit on it, a single pass drags that grit under the mop and across the tiles, and on softer finishes it can mark them. If your hard floors collect sand, pet litter or garden debris, set the robot to vacuum first and mop second as two scheduled runs rather than one combined pass. Every machine here supports that in its app, and it’s the single biggest improvement most people can make to their results without spending anything.

The other case for splitting the runs is battery. A combined pass on a large floor plan burns through a charge faster than either job alone, and a robot that recharges and resumes mid-mop leaves a drying line where it stopped. The Shark PowerDetect’s 2,093 sq ft per charge and the Dreame’s 1,202 sq ft are the numbers to compare against your actual floor area, not the runtime in minutes, because minutes tell you nothing about how efficiently the thing navigates.

One last thing on single-pass mopping: it works best on a schedule that runs more often than you’d mop by hand. These machines are maintenance tools, so three light passes a week beats one heavy pass, and the docks are built around that assumption.

What does a robot mop cost to run?

More than people expect, and it’s mostly consumables.

Mop pads and rollers wear out. Depending on how often you run it and how abrasive your floors are, expect to replace a roller or a pair of pads every few months, and they’re not cheap because they’re proprietary. That’s the single biggest running cost and nobody puts it on the box.

Dust bags are the second, and it’s avoidable. Most docks empty into a disposable bag, and a 3 L bag runs 60-75 days on typical use. The Ecovacs Deebot X12 is the exception here: its OmniCyclone dock uses a bagless cyclone rated for 48 days, so you empty a bin instead of buying bags. Over three years that’s a meaningful difference, and it’s the quiet reason we rate it as well as we do.

Then detergent, if the machine dispenses it. The Roborock Saros 20 doses automatically, which is convenient and locks you into buying their solution.

Water is the boring one that actually shapes daily use. A dock with a 3.5 L clean tank, like the Ecovacs, goes considerably longer between refills than one with 2.2 L, like the Eufy. The Roomba Max 705 Combo stretches it furthest at roughly eight weeks of mopping per fill, which is the closest anything here gets to genuinely leaving you alone.

Filters and side brushes need occasional replacement too, but they’re minor next to pads. Budget for pads, avoid bags where you can, and the rest is noise.

Which robot mop should you buy?

Buy the Ecovacs Deebot X12 OmniCyclone. It has the best mopping hardware here, the best obstacle avoidance we’ve seen tested, the highest mop lift, and a bagless dock that stops charging you for consumables. On a page about mopping, it wins on mopping.

Spend less and take the Eufy Omni C28, accepting weaker suction for the fastest roller in the group. Spend more and take the Roborock Saros 20, which is the only one here that’s genuinely excellent at both jobs. Want to forget it exists? Roomba Max 705 Combo, eight weeks between refills.
